Ive attempted doing it last time but it was too messy.

The prob with that version was messy wiring (im not as handy).

So i shopped around and tried the keychain LED and stick them to my cap. The prob with that is the batteries. I dont want the batteries to let me down while racing, plus the running cost of getting batteries. The stock LED used are not as bright too. And im changing the LED seems pretty hard (keychain comes in hard casing.)

I want to build something that is duplicable and cost-effective with things easily acquired in stores. No batteries and above all it has to work. So i shopped around again and got myself

-3 desktop LEDs (RM 30)
-3in1 USB port (RM10)
-USB extension (RM10) - can get cheaper if shorter
-Black duct tapes

and a used frame glasses as a base. And of course, a webcam. For Freetrack IR, these are the recommended webcams.

Im using the VX-3000. U can even use the PS Eye-Toy.

I just twist and bend the desktop LEDs to shorten it so the USB ports are directly at the back of my head. The 2 lower LEDs are tied to the glasses frame. And top LED is on top. Whats good abt this twisting is it created some sort of helmet so the whole thing can be moulded according to ur head shape and snug in nicely. The USB extension is for the connection to ur PC USB ports.

Currently im using normal high-density USB and make sure no one sees u putting it on or u'll be called geek all ur life like these guys..

Im planning to change the LED to infra-red LEDs and to make it work with the webcam, i need to take out the IR filter in it and replace it with some layers of film negatives.

I have tested Freetrack also 2 days ago. I had a cheap LED torch light that I strapped to a cap. Aven a single point is okay for rfactor I think because just need the pitch and yaw directions.

I have also sacrified my logitech S5500 and remove the IR filter. It worked quite good for the poor setup it was. It also made me want to make a more elaborate one :lol:

One thing mara though, I don't think it will be that easy to replace the LED you have. Be careful as you need to take into consideration their rated power. Otherwise, they may either burn or not be emitting enough light. The problem is not really to find new one but more to know which is the rating of the ones fitted on the stock USB light.

You didn't comment on how it works now with the normal LED ? For me it was working quite good with the white LED. By playing with the camera setting, I was able to make only my LED visible to the camera. The only problem was that I needed to direct the light outside of the screen,

Yup...1 LED setup is enough..Im just trying it over for FPS shooter use later on. Probably i would freetrack if i have a triple LCD setup but thats another case.

Actually u dont have to physically remove the IR filter. The guys in the Freetrack forum just use film negative or floppy disk film, paste it infront of the lens and it filters IR just as good.

Yeah ure rite abt LED power rating. Im very bad at electronics. What i might do is bring along the LED to a shop and hopefully the guy can find d correct LED. Or perhaps solder a transistor in between.

Normal LED works fine ...im getting constant 30fps with my VX-3000. I adjusted the exposure on the webcam and it shows only the 3 LEDs on Freetrack sofware.

In iRacing, im having some fps issues. Im trying to adjust the graphic settings abit n see. Probably because of the 3 LEDs setup. havent try in on rFactor yet.

I dont have any prob with other light source. Probably because i just race at night and my room light is very diffused and not visible to the camera.

Not exactly. You have to remove the IR filter if you want to use IR LEDs. The advantage of IR LEDs is that you don't see them so they don't disturb when gaming.

The film negative or floppy disk film is just there to "isolate" the light emitted by the LEDs from the others source of lights of the room but it is not that that will allow to see the IR :P

But actually, after removing the IR filter, my camera still works pretty well. I've read that under certain circumstances, it might add some noise to the image but in my room configuration, I don't see any difference.

BTW, we want to see a pix of you wearing the "helmet" :lol:

Why getting one if you are going for a 3 LCD setup ? Doesn't seem that useful once you have side views ...

Bulih ejes pusing kepala sket je....tp virtually pusing byk.

I dunno when im getting 3lcd...short of fund. But i can try trackIR first coz so far my DIY tracking is going nowhere LOL.
Even if when my 3LCD is up, i will still use my trackIR coz i want my 3lcd to cover the actual FOV rather than just an extended distorted fov.
