Indy 500 = Most premier race in the US Calender
The event was sanctioned by the USAC, but in 1979, CART was created and broke ranks with the USAC as they want a more, money driven Formula akin to F1. Since they control all the cars, Indy relies on them to attract crowd.
Tony George, owner of Indy hated CART as he sees it as not helping the aspiring US drivers, and benefiting outsiders that pay to drive. Thus he envisioned a new, cheaper league that runs on oval courses instead of permanent tracks that CART uses. IRL was born in 1995 and would begin in 1996. Also that year, he announced that all but 8 slots of the Indy 500 will be taken by the new IRL teams, thus starting an IRL vs CART wars
This leads to some ruthless decisions that did not benefit both, and in the end, CART went bankrupt, and was merged with IRL. Ironically by then, IRL has became akin to CART, a league where foreign pay to drive driver's thrive, and killing off interest for aspiring American drivers, who would prefer to race in Nascar.
